Environmental safety assessment

While concern ecotoxicology began with acute poisoning events in the late 19th century, public concern over the undesirable environmental effects of chemicals arose in the early 1960s with the publication of Rachel Carsons book, Silent Spring, documented the detrimental effects on the environment-particularly on birds-of the indiscriminate use of pesticides.

Shortly thereafter, DDT and its metabolites were shown to cause population-level effects in raptorial birds. Initial studies in industrialized countries focused on acute mortality effects mostly involving birds and fish.

The common practice of incident registration is inadequate for understanding the entirety of effects. Since 1990, research interest has shifted from documenting incidents & quantifying chemical exposure to studies aimed at linking laboratory, mesocosm and field experiments. Animal studies mostly focus on fish, insects, birds, amphibians and arachnids.

Since 1993, the United States & the European Union have updated pesticide risk assessments, ending the use of acutely toxic organo-phosphate & carbamate insecticides.

In good cooperation with Pesticide Ecotoxicology Research Institute (Hangzhou) of Zhejiang University and world famous pesticide industries of Bayer, BASF, Dupont, Dow Agriculture, Monsanto, FMC, ICI and Nufarm since 1990, Xutemp has successfully developed, tested and patented its technologies and equipment for pesticide environmental safety assessment as follows,

1) Climatic chambers and rooms for growth, culture, germination and breeding;

2) Ovens and incubators for drying, decontamination and culture;

3) Xenon-arc photostability test chamber for phototrans-formation of pesticide;

4) Volatility test chamber and chillers;

5) Bioconcentration, flow-through fish test;

6) Potter and linear pesticide applying system
